| Astronaut Scholar for 2008-09 |
|

Congratulations to Physics major Richard Wagner, class of '09, this year's recipient of the Astronaut Foundation Scholarship. Chosen by a university-wide committee, Richard's undergraduate research focuses on quantum optics. He intends to pursue an advanced degree in the field.
On September 30th, Astronaut Jim Lovell of Apollo 13 spoke to a packed house at Hall Auditorium. Lovell spoke of his experiences and the successful failure of the Apollo 13 moon mission. After his talk, Lovell presented Wagner with his scholarship check of $10,000.
Scholarship nominees are those students who have shown initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field. They must be engineering or natural or applied science (e.g. astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, computer science) or mathematics students with intentions to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degrees. The scholarship candidates are nominated by faculty in their department to a university-wide committee. The university committee selects their best two candidates and submits these nominees to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Scholarship Committee.
